Review: Super Shock Gel Eyeliner by Avon (not impressed!)

Hi ladies,

Happy Friday.

After reading countless blogs and after watching several make-up aficionados (I hate the word gurus) on YouTube raving about this gel eyeliner in a pencil format I had to give it a go.
So, a few weeks later and I received my order from Avon.

I ordered 4!
They were so cheap ( introductory offer at £3) and because the Avon online purchasing process is CRAP I decided to get a few extra back ups in case they were as good as people said.

This is the liner.

I was so exited to have a GEL eyeliner in a pencil format. I could put in my bag and I could be ready to go at any time anywhere. I wouldn't need a pot AND a brush to apply it.
I loved the concept.

My initial reaction was to swatch it on my hand.
It's THE backest black eyeliner I have ever seen.
I compared it with Smolder by Mac which was my blackest black eye liner.

As you can see the Avon eyeliner is super black and creamy.
This swatch kept me smiling for a while.

I waited a few moments and tried to rub it off and it didn't budge at all!
I tried really hard and it was still there.
I was smiling even more by now!
Supper happy.

Until I did the test on my eyes that is.

Let's see why.

This is what the eyeliner looks like just after application:
I applied it on my upper and bottom waterline just once.
I did not set it with e/s this time.
All good so far.

3 hours later.
It started to fail.
Look at how less intense and patchy the water line looks.
I also get a bit of a mess near the tear duct. I hate that.

4.5 hours later and it was even worse.
See how the liner transferred on my left eye.
Yukkk.

A close up at the disaster.
I'm pulling down my eye a little bit so that you can see how the liner gets into the fine lines.
Not happy.

So...I guess these photos speak for themselves.

It's a good idea and concept but I don't think it's worth the hype.
It's not a miracle product and it doesn't set that well (on the waterline).

The swatches on the had are amazing and they will sell the product but the actual use on the waterline is not great. I think someone told the Pixiwoos that this product is not good for waterline use for people who use contact lenses and I totally disagree. I use contact lenses and this product was no different from any other Kohl eyeliner. You always get a bit of transfer on the lenses whatever you're using. It's the way it is due to the texture of the lenses.

HOWEVER, the positive thing is that the liner performs much better when used as a normal liner on the lid.
It sets better and you don't get transfers.

Another good and very important point is that it's the blackest back eyeliner around and it has even been successfully compared to the Aqua colour eyeliner by Make Up For Ever.

My conclusion:
Pros
- It's the best black eyeliner around
-It's super creamy (it's a gel formula)
-It's affordable
-It brilliant for the lid
-Handy packaging and presentation

Cons:
-A pain to purchase online.
-Not brilliant for waterline use (my main reason for buying it)
-Not waterproof
-Not smudge proof (on waterline)
-Not worth the hype!

I will use them all up but I won't be repurchasing it.
I guess the other 3 will keep me going for a while anyway.

I hope this was helpful.

omg thank you for this review and for the time you spent taking these pics !

the only very very black liner that worked for me (and long lasting!) was the guerlain kohl one, the powder version that you have to add in your eyes ! but it's a real mess to apply !

xxx !

Hi Mercedes, thanks for the review, I did find it helpful, the pics were great at illustrating how it went wrong. It's a shame as a gel pencil sounds so promising. I adore BadGal eyeliner by Benefit, it never smudges on me, unlike anything else and I don't need to reapply. BadGal mascara tho - awful! Chloé xoxox

I'm glad it helped.I have the BadGal eyeliner that came with Glamour magazine. I find it's very black but it doesn't stay on me that much. Do you mean the waterproof version? or the thin ones they do as well? I agree..another super hyped thing..the BadGal mascara is not that great. XXX

@Beauty Addict: Yessss!! Estee Lauder Double Wear is one of my favourites at the moment! XXX

@EmmeFatale: Thanks! :) I would say pecil one will DEFO be Estee Lauder Double Wear ones and gel liner will be MAC fluidline or Bobbi Brown ones! By far!!! But whatever I do I always put a little bit of powder eyeshadow of the same clolour to set it! That does the trick for me. Hope that helps :) X
